If you are serious about placing well in Google, you really need to do lots and lots and lots of research..
In a previous post I wrote that to
SEO your site effectively, it will take more work than building a large website.
You should join forums specifically for
SEO, there are plenty.
Read article after article about
SEO.
Odviously there is a wealth of information about this subject online, just look for it. It wont be hard.
After you have a GOOD knowledge of
SEO, then you have to work on-site and off-site.
The first is to have a pretty hefty plan on how you will
SEO according to the specifications of the contents of your site such as keywords.
On-site means to optimize the actual contents of your site such as search engine readable text, headers, tags, links, sitemap etc.
Off-site means to have your site backlinked from other relevant and high
PR sites & directories.
That's just the tip of the iceberg.
You will have to learn for yourself by reading alot, not just about
SEO, but in detail of how your specific business is optimized.
However, the single most important factor in ranking well with your position &
PR is having quality one way links from site;s like yours.
This is not something you can just wing or take short cuts(unless you want to be banned).
This is real hard work with incredible results if done right.
I'll just leave you with some beginner tips:
Try to avoid linking your site to others, if possible.
Submit your site to as many directories as humanly possible.
Stay away from link farms.
Beware of keyword stuffing / excessive use.
Use original content / text.
Avoid using .jpg as text and use real text as much as possible.
Search engine's cannot read pictures nor do they know what it means, so
a site with pure pictures is worthless to Google.
Use only a small handful of keywords to optimize per page.

What you do now, may not have any effect on your ranking until 1 - 3 months later. So be patient.
Do submit your site to all the engines, but don;t submit every week.
Build yourself a sitemap.
Try to keep your site code as short & simple as possible.
Avoid excessive use of flash - search engines cannot read this and has zero effect on your
seo.
This is just the start, remember, learning and effectively using
SEO is just as much work or more than your actual website.
Good luck
