Hi, I have just updated my germanytravel website www.germanytraveladvisor.com and there is still some work to be done with a bit of the content. I am going to be filling in the blanks over the weekend.

I want to start getting some links to my site. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to do this?

Find complementary sites, and request link exchanges. Post on Craigslist. Write articles, and post them at sites such as GoArticles.com. I guess that's enough to get started.

You can submit to a ton of free directories but that will not help you with SERPs. Have you hit up WordTracker or some other program to figure out your targeted key phrases? That would be step 1, once you find your niche key phrases (eg. german travel, germany theme parks, etc) you need to update your pages and add these phrases in the title and headings.

Be advised! there is an art form to this. Make sure that the phrase is there but write it for humans. Spammy stuff will be counter productive to your efforts.

Links and PR will not give you search engine results, this is a misconception in internet marketing although finding some complementary "german" sites to advertise your sites would be a good idea. It's all about theming your content.

I would like to add to the suggestion list:

1) Create linkbait. This sounds bad, but isn't. It's simply quality content that people like to link to (typically informative). For more on linkbaiting, click here.

2) Unless you plan on selling advertising or selling the site later, don't worry too much about PageRank. As was said above, it doesn't help you with SERPs nor is it indicative of traffic.

3) Obey the Google rules. You definitely don't want to get a -30, -950, or de-indexation penalty for not obeying the rules. Google Webmaster Guidelines

5) Have constantly-updated content that will draw return visitors. Forums, blogs, etc. tend to do well in this area. Consider offering a newsletter that your viewers can sign up for. This is a good way to remind your viewers that you're still there, and introduce new services, etc. Don't spam though.

I agree with erect. Submit your site to free directories. Just remember to vary the anchor text and description once in a while.

There is some pretty useful stuff there. Also I would mention linkbaiting but I see someone already posted a link to my article on that. Linkbaiting is my top marketing method and I must say when used correctly the competition will be literally paralyzed.
