frustrated by alexa

what's your alexa rank and how many visitors do you get a month?

in july, my site got 5,113 uniques (10,314 pageviews) according to my google analytics. that's a jump from the 2,000 uniques i got when i started in may. but my alexa rank has not improved. in fact, it has worsened!

i just want to know if i am maybe expecting too much? what kind of alexa ranking should a website with 5,113 uniques expect?

from what i know, alexa only counts visitors who have alexa toolbars. my site is geared towards non-techies, so maybe my visitors don't have the toolbar so they're not counted?

any ideas will be appreciated. i'm just ranting here....

According to Alexa's FAQ, the ranking is
based in part as follows "...A site's
ranking is based on a combined measure
of reach and pageviews. Reach is
determined by the number of unique Alexa
users who visit a site on a given day.
Pageviews are the total number of Alexa
user URL requests for a site."

So, your Alexa ranking is based on how
many Alexa users visit your site. (I'm
thinking this means those with toolbars
installed).

What kind of people are likely to have
the Alexa toolbar installed? The first
thought that comes to mind is IM'ers
(internet marketers)

In that case, forums geared towards
that are probably a great source of folks
you want visiting your site.

Another idea to improve your ranking
would be to ask your website visitors
to install the Alexa toolbar.

Alexa is very inaccurate, as you just found out. You were bound to realize it sooner or later. All their data is based completely off of visitors with the alexa tool bar. Therefore Alexa has no way of recording the majority of visitors since the majority of people don’t have the tool bar installed.

I have seen the same thing on Self Help & Success Forum. The site has seen more traffic than it ever has before and is steadily increasing. It was up to a rank of 72,000 about a year ago and has now dropped to about 218,000 even with the huge increase of traffic.

The problem is you are comparing two inaccurate scales. Alexa is not accurate and while Google Analytics may be better, it is far from perfect.

Also, Alexa is comparing many websites. You can get more visitors, but other sites might be getting even more this month. So even though your numbers are up, they are not up as much as other sites so those sites will jump you in Alexa and push your rank down.

give alexa some time to update.
i started messin with sloopo.com around july 4th, 2007.
alexa reported it as somethin' around 3,000,000...
untill august 12th or so, when it popped up 240,000.

the problem isn't how often it updates. Alexa updates on a daily basis. The problem is how it gets the information about websites. It has always been inaccurate and will always be unless they change things up.

Alexa is a nice tool for bragging rights, but it has no correlation with the success of a website.

(note: success and popularity are two different things when it comes to the bottom line in business)
