I agree, I think email marketing is effective but how do you "market" w/o "spamming"?

You need to have an optin list first and foremost.

Then when you mail to your list, make the email informative. One of the best ways to 'market' to your list is to give a review of something.

I use email marketing very effectively on my sites. I have an email list that anyone can join and customer can also be added to the list upon checkout.

It is a great way to reminder past customers of where you are and what you do. Also, it is an easy way to send coupon codes, or special promotions their way.

The tool that works the best though, is used on one of my sites. It lets people enter their email address to be notified when new items come in for that category, in this case music bands. Once we get a new item for that band, they get an email letting them know. We get a ton of people signing up for these in order to stay on top of things. Some bands have hundreds of people on the list of people looking for new items from that band. When we send an email out, the click rate is over 75% and the conversation rate out of those 75% is almost 20%. That is a nice conversion rate. Of course, it is because we are giving them exactly what they signed to be notified about without useless promotions.
