Smile eBay Selling PayPal?

PayPal may be for sale... soon. Hurry up and grab it.

"The easiest way for eBay to reward its investors, they argued, would be to spin off PayPal, a move eBay management will never acknowledge considering — until the day a plan is announced."

Hmm, pure speculation.... what does eBay need the cash for? How easy would it be to unpick the businesses especially given the natural link between PayPal and Ebay.

It could be more realistic to split PayPal between the tie up with Ebay and its separate card transaction services for businesses (mainly PayPal Pro) and simply license the PayPal brand to the buyer but again, what do they need the cash for? what other business are they going to be looking to purchase with it?

I understand that the marriage between eBay and PayPal is solid and well-suited for each other, but the pundits at FORTUNE (read here) seem to think that the time is ripe for eBay to divorce PayPal, and let the shareholders cash in big time.

They also noted that PayPal's revenue from everywhere else is far greater than the one from eBay.

I can understand the suggestion for eBay to rid Skype to Google, since Google is preparing to launch gPhone soon, but the speculation of eBay to get rid of PayPal seems far too fetched.

But then again, there might be some other things going on at PayPal and eBay that most of us don't know.

Well this is what I like to call a cover up sale. The truth is paypal has been ovewhelmed with scam artists this year. I read somewhere that paypals insurance covered over 50 million dollars for fraud in 2007. Paypal is on the verge of losing their insurance coverage because of it. They have been offered insurance estimates at over 65 million dollars per year starting in 2008. Ebay is probably willing to sell paypal just because of this (cheap also)...Just from what I have been reading this year, I am sure ebay has other plans. They have been investing in lots of other, up and comers. When ebay sells paypal, paypal will fall among the ranks of honest and up front companies doing the same thing.

If anyone does buy paypal, they will either pay millions in insurance premiums or not be able to be insured until they fix the fraud going on. Either way, I don't see paypal sticking around as top dog after ebay sells them.

50+ million a year in fraud is uncalled for and very unprofessional in the business world. I am surprised the insurance companies held out as long as they did.

This is a good point and analysis; which the FORTUNE guys failed to or simply didn't want to reveal.
