Thumbs up Ebay Or Website

Does any one have an opinion on what would be better? Starting an ebay store or having your own website. Ebay has alot of traffic but there is always someone else selling the product you have for less and with all there new fees, I am beginning to think that working hard on your own website would be better.

They are only selling the products for less because they have found a better wholesaler or are using their economics of scale to great effect.

The best way to sell is to use both but if you only use ebay you should forward a domain to your store so you can optimize it. Sells from visitors that come from outside of ebay lead to a 75% credit on final value fees. Most sellers, even the ones that make millions don't even do that.

I'd say both

I'd say both,

But my angle would be to use ebay as a marketing tool to get people to your site. most ebay users looking for a product to buy online will go to ebay before even going to a search engine. If they buy from you as an online store through ebay, chances are good that you'll generate a lot of repeat business down the road through your ecommerce site... especially if you offer incentives like sales or breaks on shipping. it saves you money on final value fees too. I'd say start with ebay and ecommerce and fade out ebay.

We all know that in 5 more years ebays prices will be comparable to the real world anyway.

Good luck!

Completely agree. Offer free shipping and free return (especially if you are in apparel). A lot of people start out on ebay and expand to their own online store. Check out yahoo stores for an easy start or the soon to be launched Shopify (http://www.shopify.com)

"Sells from visitors that come from outside of ebay lead to a 75% credit on final value fees."

Can you explain this further?

I agree with everyone else here, start with eBay, it would be easier. There is such a large built in audience already who look to eBay as their source. However, your own site will be better in the long run.

some one mentioned both and i think you should use both. Why? Free advertising for you own website. Secondly to get your business off the ground, a new website will need alot of promotion whereas you can sell on ebay and build up hits to your websiteby promoting it on ebay.

If you have a regular domain that is forwarded to your ebay store you can put a tracker on it so that when people buy store inventory items you get 75% of the FVF fee back. The link below explains more.
