craigslist charging

i tried to post a job ad in boston but it wanted me to pay $25. thats ridiculous. how are they going to keep control of the market charging exorberant fees like that. I read an article recently that the owner and founder of craigslist said he was never going to sell or charge fees because he didn't need more money. whats up with that? I'm pretty angry

That's bizarre.

They would kill it even with adsense.

well i read up a little on it. its only in certain cities (high traffic cities such as NY, San Fran, LA, Boston etc.) and its for certain parts such as real estate and posting job availabilities. they say they are doing it to get rid of people spamming the site but there are better ways to do that (plus they have some great spam ditection software anyway), so i tried to post it in pr/marketing and it was $25 per category, with it being $75 in san fran. this is really frusterating and im sure someone can capitalize on people dissenting from the use of craigslist because of this.

It'd be tough, karguy.

I don't use Craigslist because for my city, it is basically useless and a pile of spam.

karguy85, job postings on Craigslist have always cost money. If you think $25 is expensive, go post on Monster.com. You will soon come back to Craigslist.

i have posted looking for people to fill jobs before and have never been charged. its just that the whole charging goes against the founders philosophy

Hmmm, Craigslist has always charged for job listings, as far as I know. I guess I could be wrong. Perhaps last time, you posted it in the wrong section?

This is actually the only source of revenue for craigslist. They charge for job postings in about 4 or 5 cities. That compiles to their $7m yearly revenue. It's actually not that bad if yiu think about it. It cost an arm and a leg to post on Monster and craigslist gets way more hits than monster.

Yes, Monster.com is $300 for a base ad. It's pretty bad...

From Aug 2004....

The company allows most listings to be posted for free, but San Francisco Bay Area job posts cost $75 and Craigslist recently began charging $25 for job listings in New York and Los Angeles.
