in my experience, you need roughly 1 dedicated server for every 10k daily uniques

this could be different depending on the size/script format of your pages

if you're heave on flash...1 server for 1k uniques

a dedicated server is $100-3000 per month..depending on what features you want

One of the reasons i ask is because you always hear about start up sites such as youtube and myspace started by just a couple people at their house. obviously, they started off small but i just dont see how they covered their costs in the early stages when advertisement income was probably pretty low.

You don't cover your costs when your start-up is new. You lose money for a while. Almost every new business loses money for a while. In most normal business startups, it is considered good if you start turning a profit within 1 year. Many companies take longer.
