Make a full header. It will look more attractive. Post under more than one name. It makes the forum look more active.

Make the gheader full and get a nicer template. Also like yourhostingspot said make a few users and post to make it look active, you can hire forum boosters to do this too a good place to do this is at nnamepros as you can get $0.02 - $0.10 per post or even less if you do some of the strategys some ofrum owners use on there.

As far as design goes, I suggest that you utilize a full header, also I suggest finding a web designer to "hook you up" as well as a theme of some sort. Because right now I looking at it I have no incentive to join your forum, when there are 1000's of sites just like this unless you're famous, write excellent articles or a combination.

My advice, look into more established forum software, when joining a forum I generally evaluate the type of forum used for one of two reasons. The cheaper the forum looks, the more likely the site is to by something fly-by-night and lacks reputability, which could deter me from joining. The thought of putting my work into a forum which is only going to vanish off the face of the planet in a few months/years after I (a member) invested time and energy into building the community and delivering excellent posts is not a pleasurable thought. So just look comfortable, give your potential members something to look at, I'd like to feel like you have invested some time and energy into your website so that I will not hesitate in doing so either.

Aesthetic is a big issue I don't want to spend my time on a website that looks horrible. Think about your user, I recommend getting something like vbulletin, laying off the monetization until you've built your reputation up as a solid forum so that when it does generate money it's flowing instead of trickling - unless its directly pertaining to building your "brand". What I mean by this is, if your website is about hustling, I think it would be kind-of funny/cool idea if you had lots of ways to hustle/make money all thoughout your website in a funny but tasteful way. So people would go to your forum and think "WOW this is a hustler" and want to jump on the bandwagon by mere association.

So hopefully I've given you a rough yet somewhate clear marketing idea as to what's hot and some direction as far as design tips. Best of luck with your venture, and feel free to just msg me if you have any questions.
