buying an already registered domain name

First off, I was originally tonog1 on these forums but decided to change my username! Also searched for the information in the title, but didn't really find anything useful.

Ok, so here is my situation.

There is this domain name that I would really like to have for my service and is very relevant for the service I eventually want to provide (for security and explanatory purposes, let's just say this domain name is short and somewhat easy to recognize).

After further research, I found that it has page rank zero, has no alexa ranking, only a couple of worthless sites linking to it, and has one of those ugly landing pages with more ads. So I Contact the owner figuring that it would come at a pretty cheap price. WRONG!

The person selling it wanted a five figure sum for it (anything more than three was too much for me). Is there anyone else that thinks this is too much for a domain name that essentially does not have any traffic or other web asset; just a short name?

My main question is: how can I negotiate them down to my desired price even though it may be 1% of what they're asking? I am not trying to be unreasonable, but my budget isn't all that much and I initially thought that given then traffic and history of the domain name, it would fall within that budget. I suppose not. I guess I will negotiate with the believe that I will not get it, and just be able to walk away.

Any feedback would greatly be appreciated.

the only problem you will encounter is that the owner of any domain name can basically charge any amount of money as he or she wants.

And it doesn't matter what or how the domain is currently ranked. There's currently no proven and tested method to evaluate the value of any domain name, except its generic, easy to spell and remember, length of word character and brandability.

So, basically, you just have to pay the price the owner is asking, and if you don't want to pay that price, then you just have to think of another domain name for your company, which may be available for registration, and you can just pay the registration fee.

It's still easy to find a good and available domain name, you just have to be creative.

For some time ago I was also looking for some domain names, once I found one then I asked the owner if he would sell it for a few thousands and he cam back to me with a ridiculous offer. So I found one which wasn't taken.

If you want a already regsitered domain, then be prepared to pay alot for it.
