best ways for a web developer to make money online?

Hello,
I am a professional web developer and am wondering what you guys think are the best ways for someone who can do just about anything online to make money BESIDES from getting paid per project/hourly to work on someone elses project?

Sure there is adsense, and referal programs and such, but aren't there better opportunities for someone who can actually code and develop a site to do something more profitable? What about selling prepackaged web scripts? How do you find a niche? Or building some type of site that can charge for a service? Sell an electronic service that you can can be sold over and over again?

Any help getting me pointed in the right direction? I am sick of working on other peoples projects. Most of them fail anyways because they were bad ideas to begin with. You know this, but you just smile and do what they want. Unfortunately, just collecting a check isn't exactly fulfilling.

A novel idea, a business plan and the willingness to bring it fruition in my opinion. If you are running short on ideas partner with someone who isn't that can use your skill set.

I know its pretty general and I cant speak from experience but it is common sense

Good luck

You really have to fill a void for something people want or need, or find a niche where the tools you develop could really help people. Once you find out what you want to develop, you have to make it a turnkey solution that you can flip over and over (or people will use over and over).

After writing that I just realized I repeated exactly what you posted.

In any case, finding that void requires a lot of research, and there are very few people who get it right the first time around. You just have to keep trying and keep on top of the game in which ever industry you choose. It may take months to years, but you always have to be looking. Because its the internet, you can be sure someone has tried any idea you may think is novel. Your job is to make it better, faster, easier, etc, or revolutionize it in such a way no one sees you coming.

Well, I guess that's where I'm stuck. Any good resources to help someone figure out what areas/markets are pofitable areas to target, or discover needs that are currently going unmet?

Have you considered selling your services as a web developer consultant?

That's what I do. I sell my mentoring service. I sell my copywriting service. I sell my article marketing service, and I sell my business promotion services.

If you have the experience, expertise, background and references, you can sell virtually any kind of service.

You are limited only by your own imagination.

You could either try doing something that you like to do as a hobby, if it has a low startup cost, or team up with someone who has a great idea and is in need of a web developer. As for the "find a need and fill it" approach, it is a lot easier said than done.

Whatever you decide to do online, you should save a lot of money on overhead since you are a web developer. I know I do. I started an internet company, Underground Media, where I handle all of the development and hosting. I also develop websites so my clients pay the hosting for me.

Thanks for the ideas so far. I realize I should have a large advantage over others as I can do most of the work myself as opposed to hiring someone for dev, seo, etc.

I will let the ideas here bang around in my head for a few days and see if anything good surfaces.
