A close friend of mine has very good idea for a commerical that has the potential of becoming an advertising campaign. If he was going to pitch the idea to a large company, what would be the best way of going about it, and how much profit should he expect?

Most large companies use advertising agencies. If you were to pitch, you would go straight to the creatives at an ad agency. The odds of you selling them a creative are slim to none, I would expect no profit. Ad agencies don't buy other people's ideas.
