Need advice on approaching possible customers.

    Hey guys,

Just wanted a bit of advice on a web development company that I have been running.

Basically I wanted to find out in your opinion the most effective way of gaining customers, I want my customers to be predominantly local, therefore I go and see them face to face and try and sort out an appointment etc..

Now I have been getting some success, but I feel im doing something a bit wrong because im losing deals which I feel were solid while I was there.

What I want to know is, whats the best way to initiate the interaction with a possible customer? call first? or go in their first?

secondly, what should I bring with me? I go in wearing a suit, but apart from that I have nothing on me, should I bring a portfolio on our first meet?

thirdly, whats the smoothest way of closing a deal, could you recommend me to any places that run a step by step analysis on pitching websites to possible customers?

    thanks in advance,

    ST

p.s im mainly aiming at local shops (restaurants,clothes,nails,etc..)

p.s.s if you could also check out my website and leave feedback it would be great, the site is mainly for customers to see after we've interacted already.

Yes, you should definitely bring a portfolio. Without seeing your previous work they may think you aren't as good as you claim. Do you understand? If people see your work, they are more likely to agree with you.
