Yeah, i have a invention and would probably need more than one million to get it created, and the business that would need to buy it would need to spend more than five million to use it, haha i gave up on that.

Advice for anyone that has a new invention:

Your first step is to write down any and all information, drawings, formulas, or anything at all related to the product, sign and date it. If possible have a witness sign it or get it notarized. Although these aren't absolutely necessary.

Next, you want to do as much research as possible. You can search the US Patent and Trademark database for free and spend years browsing through related patents. So go to www.uspto.gov and start searching. Odds are that your idea is not new.

If it is new and you would like to proceed, talk to a patent lawyer. Show them your drawings and information. They will then conduct a patent search to ensure it doesn't exist already. It is important you have already searched so that you do not waste money.

Then, depending on your invention, your lawyer may have people in house or may refer you to people who can help draft your invention into drawings for the patent file. Meanwhile the lawyer will create the patent application.
Once completed, sit back and wait, it takes a long time to hear back from the USPTO.

Patents are a waste of time and money. Unless you have a Million plus in capital dont worry about a patent.

Look into provisonal patents

there are two types of patent applications;

1. utility patent application
2. provisional application

the provisional patent application is only good for a short time, like 12 months, to give you time to develop and market your invention, and thereafter you will need to file the utility application, which is the patent application you file to apply for the actual patent protection.

We have 5 patent pending - utility applications. A utility application when filed may give you up to 2 years for the u.s. patent office to make a decision on your application, etc.

Someone said a patent application is a waste of time and money, for us, we have to file and protect our innovations, that's the only way to protect your hard work and creativity.

Patent application fees depend on each patent lawyer, and if you go to a good lawyer, who does his own patent drawings and writings or has an in-house designing team, then you don't need to go looking for designers and pay extra fees in designing.

The lawyer that we use; www.ruttlerlaw.com, is very good, reasonable, and does most of his own design. Check him out.

Check out www.legalzoom.com for a patent. I have a pretty simple product that I got patented on there and it was a lot cheaper cuz there weren't any lawyers fees. You can also get a patent search done and drawings and stuff on there. Worth a look.
