Best type of low cost low risk start-up
Hey Everyone,
I have a rather general question but one that you may be able to help with. I want to start my own business but have only about $2000 to spend so, that pretty much rules out a lot of "bricks and mortar" stores. So, what kind of business can I start? I've checked online for low cost start-ups but, it's for things like in home businesses like web page design (which I don't know how to do) or dog poop cleaning businesses.
I guess what I'm asking is what kind of businesses did you start and with how much?
Thanks!

Lisa,
If you want to be a business owner, You have to do and be what your passion is. That is the only real way you are going to succeed as a business owner.
Since you asked for advice, I will help you figure out ways to determine your profession.
First: On paper, write down the 6 things you enjoy doing (hobbies, interests etc.)
second: Out of those 6, take away the items that require anything more than a 2K investment.
Third: From there, select your favorite one from the remaining list and do more research on that item.
See if there is a demand for it via Google searches or affiliate offers. If there is, then you have your product.
No matter what business you decide to start, you will be nervous at first and that is OK. It is completely normal. You do not need a website to tell you what business you should have. I think that is poor advice. Make sure you are passionate about your product/service. For that is only way you will have the ability to be successful with your new business.
I hope this helps you in some sort of way.
Ty

Great Advice everyone, my interests really don't lend themselves to making money, I like reading books, watching movies and working out. A bookstore, movie theatre and gym are a little of my price range but perhaps I can find out something with affiliates. And I will check out the section they have here - thanks!

Since you like books, movies & working out, think along that line..
Be creative and daring and watch for a problem you can solve, a solution you can provide, and what extra value you can offer in the solution..
Likes working out does not equate to opening a gym ya..

Just an update that I've decided to go in with a partner on a few websites that she has (blogs really) and optimize them for affiliates and adsense. It may be non-unique but we're going to give it a shot.

If working out is one of your passions, you could take some training in becoming a professional fitness trainer. You would take the necessary classes to become certified for safety and legal reasons.
Then you can go around to different gyms and perhaps see if you can offer your services there as a freelance personal trainer. And also in people's personal gym at home (if you live in a wealthier neighborhood).
Just an idea.. I'd only do it if it's a true passion though, since it takes a LOT of passion, networking and determination to build up your regular clientelle.

The best type of low-cost online business to start would be affiliate marketing. I create 3D art as a hobby and I turned my art site into a site that takes advantage of affiliate marketing. You can see what it looks like by going to PoserByDesign.com The total cost for me start up the business was $30 + $200 for some educational materials to show exactly how to do affiliate marketing. Now that I know every business from here on out will cost $30 and some of my personal time to work on it.
If you are able to get really good at it then it's possible to make $1000 a day off of sites that makes use of affiliate marketing. I did the same thing with my passion for business and created a site called the OnlineMoneyHut.com where I help others to have a better idea of what it takes to start an online business and how much to expect from each type of business.
So far this method has been the best method for me and the least expensive
Frederick
