And now that we have all stated what we think.
I would like to discuss that which I know. I currently make a percentage of people's telephone bills in New Jersey, Deleware, North Carlina, and New York.
I am currently affiliated with some very successful people, as well as the same folks who provide Verizon's comparable service
If you would like to make money in an industry that is the ultimate consumable, If you would want to learn how to capitalize in an industry as fast growing as VOIP, if you're interested in the personal development that comes from an entrepreneurial venture....then let's talk!
I don't need everyone to understand, I only need a few hardworking, goal orienteded people like myself who can see the oppurtunity. This industry is like wet cement...it's the beginning......the timing is perfect and it's time to take action!

This market is in between usergroups the initial techno heads have already bought now it is about to hit the the above average to average user which need advertising and marketing to persuade them.
I your are truely going to hit this market with a bang design a wifi phone or wifi cellphone.
As our generation ages we will rase our kids in the same the internet wireless connectivity but we will be old enough to have our city and state official make our cities offer free wireless internet to its people.
If you can create a cool flip phone that will connect to any wifi signal then you will have a lead above the rest.
Since most cities are now covered with wifi internet you are now taking your 300 billion market and adding the cellphone market that is where the real money is.
And by doing this you can sell the phone to you competitors customers giving you an opportunity to turn them to your customer.

You know they have this already--I saw it in Office Depot

Why not use skype I am sure it is a fraction of the price and just as good?
You can hook it up to a real phone too now.

Just a thought...
VoIP is still in its infancy. I've worked with hosting companies and telecom providers as a sys admin and an engineer. I know what type of equipment this will take, and you're talking in the millions. And I don't mean a million. The equipment alone will cost you in excess of 10 million. The bandwidth providers that can carry what you want will also cost you in the millions. I've seen what redundant carrier class bandwidth costs, and it's not getting much cheaper. Going with oversold BW providers isn't going to cut it when you carry VoIP lines. A simple cable line now will not handle calls well if you happen to be downloading a lot. Not that I download illegal stuff, cuz that would be illegal =) Point being, unless your take is doing better than well established companies on the end user equipment level, this is going to be a tough market to break into. BW and hardware will blow your budget to well into the 20 million dollar range just to purchase and operate for 1 year.
Now take into account advertising something enough to meet a break even analysis of around 5-7 years legitimately and show a positive EBIDTA growth. This will require 1st, second and third round funding. The setting up of equipment alone will run you $20,000 in travel expenses, because you're going to need interstate redundancy from the same people who host places like akamai.com. Those are major peers around Santa Clara, Ca. and right outside of DC where MAE east and MAE west meet along with some other large carriers.
Not saying don't do it, it might be great. Just putting this in perspective a bit.
