I am looking to lauch a social networking site very soon. The web design, scripting, and domain name are all in check. I was wondering if anybody can give me an idea as to how much space and money should i spend on hosting? Ideas on promoting the site would also be gladly appreciated.

Who's your target audience? You do realize Myspace and Facebook pretty much have the social networking handled, right?

I understand that but that is not my concern. I just want an idea on how much i should invest in hosting

go on www.godaddy.com click on hosting they have some excellent plans.

Just get a standard package for now. Unless you expect phenomenal growth, any hosting package should do. Once you do need to upgrade, there won't be any problems.

thanks a lot. i put up a simple page just to see whether people would be interested in joining my site. in less than two weeks i had 1,000,000 hits and 202 sign ups to date. I think I have something good going so i really dont want to mess it up and i must be honest but i am very new at this whole business thing. I just had an idea and decided to run with it

How many unique vistors and pageviews did you get?

Ok, then a standard hosting account should be sufficient for now. Host Gator has a plan that is $10 a month and it has 75GB of bandwidth per month. That should be able to handle 250,000 pageviews a day unless you have really large page sizes.
