How do you find good partners?

I heard a good way to find a good business partner is to take a weekend roadtrip with them to see how you can get along with them. Any interesting ideas?

Surround yourself with people that can cover your weaknesses. Yes, getting along is important but make sure s/he will be an asset to your company.

Make certain these partners can contribute and have the vision. Try not to give away ownership...you can do profit share percentages, but try to keep the company as your own so you can control the steering wheel. You don't want someone taking your vision and distoring it.

Understand each other, share vision and don't believe 100% in assumption because a wrong assumption can be a very high price for you to pay.

And don't forget to build a business under the protection of the law.

I'd think you'd have to find the partner you like before you can take the road trip or trying to find your partner "on" the road...

It your parnership is going to be close, (you hold the nut and he turns the bolt type thing, than yeah, you should probably be able to get along with him and a road trip might not be a bad idea...

but if it's a real business relationship, it shoudl work regardless of your ability to "get along" on a personal level.

Lol. That's a great idea. However that's just a small portion of it. It is very wise to find out/share/discover strengths and weaknesses. You truly want to be aligned with people who are strong where you are weak.

Some people get along because they have the same interests and the same strengths and weaknesses. They identify with each other.

Communication is key. Similar ethics is important too. If you balance out each other and each allows the other to speak and respects the other's point of view...it's a pretty good indicator.

Select a topic of interest (passionate about) to you both and see how the conversation goes. Smooth or combative. Never go into business with a combative person.
