Look into sharebuilder.com. $4 a trade for monthly reoccuring trades with no minimum. This might be a good option for dollar-cost averaging. If you want less risk, look into index funds. If you want to play it really safe, put it into a high yield online savings account or money-market account.

Make sure the commision to buy and sell are satisfactory for you where ever you decide to sign up with ( If you do ). For 5 years now I had etrade and will never go to any other firm. There trading platforms are greatYou get nasdaq Level 2 quotes, tick by tick charts and more. They also have a section that you prcatice trading, play money competions, ATM check card, checks and so on. One of the greatest things that I like about them is that they have free Trading centers that you can walk in and use there state of the art systems to Day trade & Invest.

But I advise you to buy couple of books before you begin.

Scottrade is a good place for trading. You could also put the money in a money market for the summer.
