Why did you choose to be a entrepreneur?

You can go to college and get a gaureented set income and it can be nice too, or you can become a entrepreneur and not have anything gaureented in life... why did we all pick the second one?

We didn't pick it. It picked us.

That's why I refer to us as preneuraholics. We're addicted to the thrill of the risk and the unknown. We want more. We can't just settle for the cubicle life. We need to create. We need to lead. We need to stand out from the pack. We need to do our own thing.

I'm with bizdev on this one. I've been trying to stuff myself into cubicle life for a couple years now just to build up some experience and savings. But it has been hard. The entrepreneur inside me keeps trying to kick his way through and I know I can't contain him much longer. He's just not happy being locked in a cube 40-50 hours per week.

I don't think there was ever a moment that I decided I someday wanted to be an entrepreneur...it just happened that I've always wanted to be, at least since I can remember.

You know what i've noticed about myself and entrepeneuring (if thats even a word) is that I see chances everywhere for improvement, etc... like local clothing stores I know I could get them more business by throwing fashion shows for them or doing stupid stuff like that, but I have no idea where to start, and its hard to find a starting point.

I spent a few years at a major Fortune 100 company. It was an incredible experience. I learned so much and I loved being there. I rose through the ranks very quickly. But the higher I went, the less there was for me to do. I became extremely bored and I just couldn't get out on my own fast enough. Everybody thought I was nuts to walk away from the money and the benefits and the opportunities.

Admittedly, it has been difficult. But once you're bit, that's it. It's sink or swim. I'm a Preneuraholic all the way.

I completely disagree with the idea of "it [entreprenuership] picks us." Entreprenuership is no different than choosing a major or find a job; it's a decision that is made because it's the best decision for you. Your circumstances can change at anytime, but you will always have the opportunity of making your own decisions with your life. Isn't that the point of being an entreprenuer anyway? There are just so many different type of entreprenuers that it makes no sense to stereotype them all into one group.

We adapt to our circumstances, our circumstances don't adapt to us. With enough hard work, you can be and do anything. If anyone tells you anything else, share this with them.

    Good discussion here.
However, generally speaking, to be able to be and do anything you want, you will need the freedom to do so. Generally (I don't want to stereotype), if you're under somebody else's thumb, you likely won't have that freedom.

While it is true that you must choose the path of entrepreneurship, the desire must be there first in order to be in the position to choose it. I believe the desire is not something that you attain to. It's either there or it isn't. It's either a part of you or it isn't.

I agree that it chose us not the other way around. I like to ask people the question do you want to be an employee or employer? thats basically what it comes down to.. even a CEO in the end is an employee(unless he of course is the chairman also, in which case he could still lose his job anyways!). entrepreneurship is like being hispanic or african asian or whatever, your born with it. some people are born with fast metabolism, 6 fingers to a hand, down syndrome, blue eyes, brown hair, asthma or a heart murmur and some are born with entrepreneurial spirit.

    Just my opinion
