I wouldn't charge that much for people who will supposedly be supporting your 'endeavor' - if you want a portfolio quickly the only route to take is lowering prices dramatically of doing a number of 'freebie' jobs

That is a good price, especially including hosting etc. but if you don't have a portfolio to show then people won't pay as they don't know what you're capable of. Perhaps approach some local businesses to you and ask if they want a website and offer it at a very cheap price.
