I have been working Full time for myself for 21/2 years after the company that i had worked for moved a long way from home as i did not want to move i had 2 options find another job or setup my own business and i chose the latter with my massive pay off that i got.As i work from home we have 2 offices in our home as this was the cheapest option and i have to say i have never regretted it,the only thing that took some use too was the change in routine and missing my work friends but it was a risk that i took and sometimes i thought had i made the right move in the early days but i stuck with it and i have moved from being self employed to starting a ltd company in the UK in the last 6 weeks.
After taken all of my everyday expenses out i am substantially up money wise and the added bonus that i am the master of my own destiny, the only problem i thought i might have was my wife but as she works from home with her own business she fully understood what was going on.

The best time to take the leap is when the best opportunity arises. For some, they base it on set income requirements, for others, it's when their heart races at the thought and they can't think of anything else... Some like to start when all the odds are against them other not until their are a hundred safety nets in place...
Personally, I think the best time is when you no longer want to remain dependant on others (for success or failures)

when the income from your business is double your income at your j-o-b many say, but if your income from your business is steady and obviously moret than at your job and you have enough stored away for a stormy day then why not go full time w/ your business?

Hmm...I reckon that when you're able to actually conclude by doing the numbers that your time per hour is now worth so much more than what your current job is paying you.
Also, when you start to feel that the money and satisfaction you get from your regular job seems insignificant.
It would vary from individual to individual...

Full time or part time, it's the 'quality' time that matters.

When to make decision to go into your part time business full time
Good question,
Having gone through that decision process, I can tell you first hand, it was not easy decision. I was working for a fotune 5 company, new company car every year, 4 weeks vacation, unlimited sick pay, stock options, retirement, I only worked a few hours a day, it looked like the perfect job, but that was the issue, it was just a job.
Simply put, there is no one answer for everyone. There are just too many variables, and looking at the current market turmoil and recession, now is not the right time for most businesses unless it is one which is recession proof. This is my specialty, identifying businesses which will not be impacted by recession or worse, depression.
I was earning more than my main job after only the first year of starting it, but I grew up in a conservative time where we were taught to find a 40 year career with one of the big companies. I had to battle that imbred mentality I had drilled into my head by everyone. Strangley enough, my father was a risk taker, top sales person, but moved around taking offers for more money like few were doing in those days. I was more inclined to want to start my own business, but being in such a nice position, I didn't quit my job until I could not handle my own part time any longer.
It was not about money, for money comes and money goes. I just don't want to see anyone make a decision to leave their job on money. I was bored, had created a position which enabled me to have a lot of free time, and this came about by working smart, not hard. Needless to say, many in the corporate world are content with their jobs, as I was in beginning, but then you realize, most jobs are limited in advancement opportunities due to company politics, and this more than anything made my decision easy one.
Once you see your future, you know when to quit. I saw the future as not being what it was for our past generation, just as it is not the same for our future generation. In short, there is no such thing as job security, and once I learned that lesson, I started my own part time business which I converted to full time several years later. When I finally quit, everyone thought I was nuts, but they didn't know about what I was doing on the side. It all came down to my understanding my desires to own my own company, control my own destiny, and then doing it, again, it was not about the money I was making, it was about being fulfilled and happy doing what you are doing. Sorry, the word job is not in my vocabulary. lol

There's no set formula. I worked nights and built my copywriting business in the day. I quit that job after a year when I had enough long-term clients not just projects coming in.

If I knew that within 30 days I was going to make 10k a month from my business then why not quit my job right now? But I think some of us are Fearful,Uncertain, and Doubtful about ourselves being able to produce that kind of income. Were waiting for our circumstances to change before we believe. That's why we have back-up plan's and those "Safety Nets" in the back of our minds "just in case I fail". If you read "Think and Grow Rich" you will begin to understand that we are in control of out results. It may not happen the way we expect, but it will happen. What ever image we believe about ourselves is effecting out lives and could be critical to succeeding in our business.
So I agree that it's up to the individual to decide if he will make it completely clear what he/she wants to achieve, when he/she will achieve it and an idea on how to go about that. then we have real financial security, being about to generate money where every we go because we understand how to apply the basic laws of success.

I agree and have also read "Think and Grow Rich" and I have not looked back since. If you put enough effort into anything eventually you will succeed at it.

I will have to agree with everyone that says that there is NO formula that works across the board with any and all entrepreneurs. The facts will lie in your own reality...
Personally, I have no wife and no kids. My savings.....well, we won't get into that. I can hardly afford to be a full-time designer after all is said and done. BUT at the end of the day, I have the freedom to work on my own schedule, and to be where I want to be WHEN I want to be there.
I've been "full time" for two years.....it's terrifying and exhilarating all at the same time!!

When you MUST spend more time on your business than you do at your job! Then you either quit your job or close your business depending on which makes more money.
Personally I prefer an online business that runs by itself and does not require a lot of time.
As soon as I find a job and have the cash I need to finish my website I'll show you what I mean!
