    What's in a LOGO?

    What's a logo for?

Seriously. What's the purpose of a logo? Does it articulate who and what your business does? I don't think so because Nike, Adidas logos do nothing to articulate their business nor do they represent the business name (like Apple or Google) but have become powerful branding icons in and of themselves. So then are they the basis of a brand? Not necessarily because there are many powerful "brands" out there where few people can effectively identify the logo (i.e. MySpace).

Should logos be simple? Or complicated?

    What's in a logo?

:::as you can tell, my partner and I have moved from the "naming" issue to logo disagreements:::

the reason that those companies do so well is because the branding is so engrained in society. You see those symbols and immediately know what they are. You see nike, adidas, etc...all the time, where as you hear of myspace, but they don't advertise to drive home there brand logo.

Exactly. So what is a logo for? If its for branding purposes, why have a growing number of companies successfully branded themselves WITHOUT a logo (MySpace, Google).

If its just there to represent who you are, why do so many companies have them? I know they serve SOME purpose, I'm just wondering if anyone can articulate WHAT that purpose is?

Maybe its just the BASIS for branding.

myspace has a logo and google rainbow letters is a logo imo but both these are sort of viral people like saying google and myspace . It is for branding makes advertising very easy just stick your logo on all sorts of junk its easy. Logo's have a lot to do with brand recognition. Sure Google and Myspace don't need them. They don't provide a product nor try to sell you a service. Their business is not made on B2B or B2C they make their money through ads and they are both a location people go to for their specific needs. They need no brand.

Now a physical product or business service with many competitors in the industry globally and locally needs to have something to help them stand out. Thats where a logo comes in.

    Hope that helps.
