What should we do about the troubled auto makers in the US?

There is a lot of talk about GM and Ford these days. With their stock prices plummeting and new car sales acting as the driving force behind their demise I’ve heard a few different ideas as to what we should do. Here is my idea.

I've been following this closely myself. I'm confident GM will get some kind of help from the Fed. Most likely it will be TARP money in exchange for a stake in the firm. The systemic risk that a collapse at GM poses to the rest of the economy in jobs and in other industries that rely on the Big 3 for revenue is just too great for the Fed to ignore. GM has very limited cash left and I'm predicting that without immediate aid they do not even make it through February (or possibly January).

Disclosure: I own stock/options in GM.

Well I think the US Gov will bail them out. Kinda scary if you think about it!
