Depends what you trading. If your going to trade penny stocks you go with Ameritrade, anything else you go with Scottrade.

When I first opened a broker account I used Sharebuilder because there are no account fees and no account minimum. Since then, I have had no problems with the account and they have lowered their commission by $5 so I've stuck with them.

In my opinion, Sharebuilder is a great, low cost option.

Skip on the Etrade unless you plan on investing Large sums of money, they are VERY expensive they Nickel and Dime Every drop out of you. That is why I am in the process of trying to get my money out.

If you're really serious about trading you should consider Interactive Brokers. Low commissions and near-professional grade trading platform (tons of information on your screen, and very fast). Thinkorswim (mentioned above) is also very good.

I also have an Etrade account, and I agree their commissions are really high unless you are a pretty active trader with large transactions.
