This is a long one but I promise it’s worth reading! I like to call it “what do you get when you combine a bunch of ideas from YE with $10,000 and six months worth of work?”
The answer Welcome to GOGETS.COM (coming in June)
I came to YE back in November looking for some ideas for an internet based company. I already had a fairly successful consulting company that concentrated on working with non-profits and the auto auction industry so I had a little money to invest. I did my homework and chatted with people for about two months and then in January I started making acquisitions. I continued buying up websites up until the end of March. In all I bought 76 websites from various different people and from various different places. While only one of the websites was purchased from someone I met on YE, I have started working with a few different people some of which will have affiliate programs on my new site.
About a month ago I came back to YE to announce my progress. It was not met with warm reception. I quickly learned that I had made some errors in judgment and that I may have put too much money into parts of my plan. I rarely get discouraged so I took the advice I received and I went back to the drawing board. I modified my plans and found that I would have a much more feasible project if I combined a few of the sites instead of operating them independently. Think of it as Wal-Mart if you will. They don’t have separate stores for each of their departments. They group them all under one roof and then cross sell. I believe that the services that will be offered on Welcome to GOGETS.COM will provide business entrepreneurs with all the tools they need to get their company started and to keep it running successfully.
As the site Welcome to GOGETS.COM is new and still a work under construction I’m still looking for a few final pieces. So I’m here again first to see what you all think of my idea and second to see if I can fill in the missing pieces.
Generic Article Content (Internal)
This was all about the size of the site. I have about 65,000 articles from over 5000 different authors. This generic content which is 100% free can be RSS fed to any blog you like. This will give you a chance to set-up blogs on any topic you like and get free content. You can also use this section to build back links to your site. Simply submit an article with a link to your site in it. If you want to advertise your blog then feed your posts to my generic content section. This will be an excellent way to get your blog noticed.
Original Content Creation Service (Affiliate)
Good original content has become a hot commodity these days. I’ve partnered with a YE member who employs about 50 writers capable of providing customers with top notch articles for their blogs, sites, forums, or any place else they might need it. This service is being provided by a YE Member
SEO Services (Affiliate)
As this is one of the hottest areas of business on the internet my site would not be complete without SEO Services. This is being done with a YE Member
Web Design & Hosting Services (Affiliate)
All the basics you need to get a quality site up and running. This is being done with a YE Member.
Traffic Generation Services (Affiliate)
This is the section everyone on YE loves to hate. This section now has 10,000 members and receives a little over 150,000 page views a month. I decided to add this section simply for its traffic and monthly advertising revenue. This should help Welcome to GOGETS.COM shoot up in the rankings.
Directory Listings (Internal)
I purchased a database of 6.5M directory listings from the US as of July 2007. I did this because it significantly increases the size of Welcome to GOGETS.COM. The directory section is also linked to the generic article section. So if you are looking at articles about bookkeeping then you will have an opportunity to enter in your zip code to ‘go get a local’. There will also be space for advertisers to advertise and of course Google Adsense.
I have discussed ways with one YE member on how to make this section much more profitable. I still plan on talking to that YE member about an affiliate program in the near future.
Classifieds Section (Internal)
This is a free classifieds section similar to all the other ones out there. I’m not going to try and convince anyone that mine will be better than the others. My classifieds section will start off primarily automotive as this is where I have the most contacts. I have set-up a deal with Capital Auto Auction to list all 1000 units that they have for sale each week. This will give me a continuous stream of fresh listings to build a following off of. I’ve even managed to negotiate a deal with the auction house whereby I will charge them $0.05 every time someone clicks on of their advertisements. This will give me an income stream that I can reinvest into future advertising and development of this section.
Things I’m still looking for
The one thing you need to understand is that all services provided on the Welcome to GOGETS.COM site are going to be provided as gogets services. What this means is that all the affiliates that I will be working with will operate on my site as if I’m personally the one selling the service. For this reason I will only have one affiliate for each service.
Venture Capital / Funding Section
I don’t plan on adding this from day one. This is a significantly harder section to manage then anything above. I’m looking for ONE Company interested in operating this section either as an affiliate or as an advertiser. I’d like to partner up with some who has a great deal of experience but at the same time doesn’t mind sorting through 99% of the garbage they will get. I’m going to be very specific about who I work with on this section. It may be a VC company, it may be an individual investor, or it may turn out to be some sort of banking relationship.
Forum
Everyone keeps telling me I need a forum. I’m at a tossup here. While I would like one I think there is nothing worse than going to a website that has a forum and seeing that no one uses it. This can kill an entire site. I’ve spent two months trying to buy an active business forum, but have had no luck. If anyone has an opinion on this please let me know.
Photo Host / Sales Site
These can bring in a ton of traffic. I’ve found a few that are reasonably priced but none that are for sale that offer the service I need. I know a few photographers and I’ve offered them a site that will allow them to post their pictures and then sell the rights to other users. This is not an original idea by any means but it is still something I would like to add.
Business Consulting Service
I’ve left this section off now because I think it can only be added after everything else is up and running. I plan to run this myself or maybe with a few partner/affiliates. This would include business planning, incubation services, accounting and finance management, and similar services. There are a few people I’ve met on YE that provide these types of services so I’m all ears to any ideas you may have.
Well after one long arse post this is where I’m at. My site is going into Phase two development next week and then internal testing after that. I hope that sometime in May I can open up the site to YE users to play around with before it goes 100% live in June.
I need your feedback! Had I not come to YE I’d have no project… had I not come back my project would have failed.
