What do you pay for web hosting? Market research.

Hello, doing a bit of research. Let me ask you guys, (and gals)...

What do you pay a month in web hosting? How much storage/transfer do you get and how much do you actually use? What type of website is it?

Do you think there is a market for smaller hosting plans? No one I know comes close to what their account limits are, and as a reseller it seems odd to sell extraordinarily more than what your customer needs. Doing that, takes your "product" (storage) out of stock quicker, with the excess going to waste.

I have some ideas on how to compete with repuatable hosting companies and offer some services that I would consider to be unique, with the hopes of selling a lot of smaller, cheaper accounts then selling a couple more expensive bulky ones.

So far I haven't found any reason not to use Godaddy. It's $6.99 month to month for unlimited space and transfer and less than $6/mo. if you prepay for a year. (I realize it's not truly unlimited, but I've used them for the last seven years on several sites and never had an issue. Their customer service is great too.

P.S. This isn't an endorsement by YE. I've used GD for my own stuff. Not sure what YE uses.

I hear bad things about hostgator, and godaddy, do research on hosting...I do my research through friends and other like-minded websites and businesses. And then I check WebhostingTalk for feedback from others through community feedback on company's hosting.

    Thumbs up

Web hosting is basically a service given by companies who provide space on the servers. The server is usually owned by the company and they provide space on it for their clients wishing to put themselves on the internet. There are many such companies who provide hosting services. You can get a lot more details on web hosting on the net. And not only that you can also get a list of SEO Hosting companies too.

Yes, $25/mo is expensive for just personal hosting, even business hosting. It better be on a fast, non-overloaded server with one hell of a support team for them to justify charging that much. Do they do anything else for you, or just simply host it?

I have found a reputable and very fast host in which I will be doing business with soon, I will be offering hosting (hopefully) within the next month or so.

Packages will start very reasonably, with a reasonable amount of space/bandwidth per package. PHP5, MySql, CGI/Perl, etc, etc. All clients get a cPanel, with Fantastico installed so you can quickly and easily install popular scripts like Wordpress, Joomla, image galleries and much more.

If anyone is at all interested, add me to Twitter and I am sure I will tweet the URL (And announce it on this site) once I get everything set-up.

First few clients can get some free hosting to test drive my service and review it.

I host with DreamHost. Everything is unlimited and it's around $10 a month.

Haven't had any issues with them so far. Their customer service has been excellent.

I pay about $8/month with Bluehost. But I had to pay a full year in advance. Not sure if that qualifies for $8/month.

Looks like I need to compete with HostGator, with all this HostGator talk.

The trouble is with these large hosts, generally speaking, is their overloaded servers. I don't know what kind of websites you guys have who are with them, I know plenty of people on them who are pleased with the service they get. However I also know others with larger sites, who can't stand the sluggishness of HostGator.

[b]What do you look for in a host?[/b[
Is it price? Features? (What features do you need?) Reputation? (Meaning you would pay more for a host with a great rep, then a questionable one at half the price?)

Do things such as server speed, automatic script installation for popular scripts, green/environmental hosting appeal to anyone?

And when I say "green hosting", I mean powered by Wind or Sun, and not HostGator's "green hosting" which is simply buying green energy credits.
