What do you look for in a web designer?

as the title asks, what are the key points you look for when selecting a web designer.

I also want to know, if you were to retain a web designer on a weekly basis (set number of hours) what do you think would be a reasonable rate ?

    Thanks for your time!

I do not know about a reasonable rate, but as far as what to look for, it's pretty basic stuff. I would look for references, previous jobs done, how long they have been in the industry. How well they work with HTML, PHP, Java Script, etc... Also, take advantage of your time with them and ask for their opinion. Find someone who gives you good advice and is opinionated. They will likely be valuable assets to you.

I will only pay by project. I haven't had a client who is willing to pay the hour in two years. I don't do design work on my own I coordinate it for clients. We put out a RFP for the project and based on those responses we chose our vendor.

A fair honest quote for the job required. SO many of these jack-asses think they can scalp the general public of thousands to tens of thousands for a simple job. We were looking for web dev, and found one company in atlanta ga that charges 25,000 dollars for a BASIC website. We found another company that would do it for 3500.
