what do you guys think of franchises?

So In a couple years I am for sure either going to be opening my own art store OR I'm thinking about just buying a franchise like subway or something? But I personally don't like the idea of it, it doesn't seem very entrepreneur like but at the same time its almost a gaureented income.

whats your opinion on buying franchises?

It depends on the location and your market base. What are the customers buying in your area? What services are they using? What services do you think they would like? If you find something, it doesn't actually have to be the food industry, it may even be a movie theatre, or a small brand name store like Claires, or Hot Topic.

Subway is def. not a guaranteed source of income..ask any Subway owner..or google it. There are no guarantees..not even with franchises. Your best bet is to do some research if that is the way you plan on going...Check out a variety of franchises before settling on one..and make sure you have a good location. Location is always the key with retail or food sales. It doesn't matter how awesome your franchise is, if its not in a good location, your pretty much screwed.

Thats exactly what I was going to say. Be careful even thinking that a franchise is guaranteed income. Quiznos is another for example. I know two seperate owners. One owns one, the other owns 4. Neither are happy with any of the numbers they are doing. One is across from a college campus and after a year, he was finally able to take home a little money, ONCE! Ouch! So be careful with that.

If you have a very clear idea about opening your art store, it is better for you to create a good management system for your store. Even when you start small, differentiate your art store services, create good relationships with your art customers, I believe it will grow. Maybe later on in the future, with constant development, you can start creating your art store franchise system.

I think you should do your own thing instead of being restrained by a companie's franchise laws. But it all depends on the opportunity.

Personally I wouldn't recommend a Subway franchise. You're just buying yourself into a job.

I think there's nothing wrong in franchising a business for as long as it creates good income and the business are continues improving.

If you are willing to pay for the royalty then you are on the right track. In franchising a business, its clearly stated that you don't own it but you're helping them to improve their market.

I was just giving subway as a example, like would you either invest in a franchise or your own idea? Franchises are a little less riskier regardless of location

p.s. dick head matt, theres a reason I said in a couple years and not "im going to go do it right now" so think about what you say before you pull out a ignorant comment like you did and whats wrong with getting other peoples views on ideas?

I agree with you. It doesn't seem entrepreneur like. All of the innovation has been taken care of...and instead of really "building a business from scratch" you are just leveraging the name brand and the location where your store is.

I myself wouldn't want to touch a franchise because all of the creativity has already been created.

I think what I like most about starting a business is the initial push into the marketplace and gaining stability...further utilizing the creative marketing juices that flow around in my head throughout the day.

With a franchise it is already stable...and therefore...you are just "a number" that has a full time job that you own.

Start your own store. It will be more fulfilling even though you carry more risk.

Build your own store, then start the franchise.

I wouldnt say its exactly stable for some franchises. There are a ton of franchises out there with very few locations. Getting one of them, you will still have to fight for your share of the pie. I know your talking about big name franchises, and yes your correct on that. Just dont forget there are others that arent as turn key--and arent as expensive either!

You can also look at it this way--Buy a franchise and get it turn key running, so you can have the time AND money to spend on your pet project. Thats how Ive done it, and it seems to be working. Just a different way of looking I guess.
