    What can you patent

There has been a trend lately of companies sueing more successful companies for patent infringement. But most of the patents are for something anyone could think of. For example: Creative sueing Apple for their patent on "hierarchical navigation system" in a mp3 player.

I'm a little confused on what you can patent nowadays. Can you patent websites? Could i patent a format for websites? Could I patent the idea of a certain website?

Can I patent something I havent even created physically?
