    Western Union

    Hi

My supplier wants me to pay by western union. Is this a legit way to pay for products as I've heard it's associated with a lot of scams.

    Thanks

No, western union is very unsafe, I recommend you just walk... no wait just run away! Western Union is a very unsafe way to send cash as it's untraceable, and unlike services like Paypal its impossible to re-claim your money back. I would recommend you use a different service that offers way more protection.

He says he dosent have paypal and he has also said I can send a bank transfer to his account. He has sent me lots of emails and a terms and conditions page. I also found him on alibaba, with all this is it likely that it's a scam?

    CharlieB,

I'm not saying he is, or is not a scam,
It would be kinda silly to say every service provider that opts into asking for payment via Western Union is a scam, although WU is associated with alot of scam's and un-legit, fake service providers. Not to say every provider is a fake, or trying to scam you by asking for payment that way.

I would recommend you do a little research on the company/provider before handing over any cash what so ever, a good way to do this is via a google search try searching for 'WebSite Here' and the keyword scam, that way you should find independent websites with reports and comments from other users that may have been scammed by the same service. Research is always key!

Remember if your unsure about a service provider, just walk away and find a new one you can trust! Better to say 'No' then get scammed!

Thanks for all the advice on here from everyone, I really appreciate it. In doing some back ground research I found this: TrustPass Profile - Shaoxing Wanlin Textile & Garments Co., Ltd. which seems to show that they are legit. They also appear on other wholesale websites such as tradekey and tradepad. However i've also realised that they only started trading this year and they only have 6 pages of results of Google where most companies have a lot more, although they do have lidl as a customer.

At this point is it wise to say i'll pay with paypal or no deal or am I being too cynical and with this new information pay via western union? I'd appreciate any feedback, I just want to know what more experienced people would do in this situation.

    Regards

If this guy really wanted your business, he'd set up a paypal account to receive your funds.

I guess you are in the driving seat, its better to be safe than sorry it would not take long for them to add the PayPal facility and if they wont budge i would walk away from it.

Thanks, ive just looked at other suppliers and they all seem to offer similar payment terms which is T/T (bank transfer I believe), L/C (not sure what this is) or western union. Now when I tried to do an online bank transfer to this supplier he didn't have a sort code and his account number was too long to enter. If this is a scam, would he be giving me his bank information and would all the other suppliers be offering bank transfer of western union?

    Thanks for your help

I don't think its a scam if he's providing you with his bank account details, I think i'm right when I say bank accounts can be traced back to the account owner if you are indeed scammed by these people.

As Mega B said, it wouldn't take long for them to add the PayPal facility, although some providers opt out of using Paypal due to the high commission paypal charge on transactions, so this may be the reason why they are not using it.

    Good luck anyway!

If you plan on sending him more than $300 tell him you want to use escrow. This seems kind of sketchy.. How much did you plan on sending him?

It was $70 for a sample of which to do Market research as I only have a paper prototype but after for a bulk buy of 1000 it will be about $1200. I have contacted other suppliers but I haven't recieved anything back yet.
