    Weird question

I got this question from a prospective buyer.
"We'd like to get some stuff from you, but to purchase from a new vendor by VISA, we need a signed Vendor Data Record that has your FEIN number. This is the State Of California's version of a W-9 form. Whom can I email this page to?"

    Is that normal ?
I am afraid of giving my fed tax id to unknown.

Would you rather that they take your social? It's not uncommon to ask for FEIN numbers. I had to ask for my day care's FEIN number so I can use it for deductions when I do my personal tax.

If you don't think that they are legit-you can do further due diligence by checking BBB and you can also take theirs. If you are still not comfortable, consult your accountant or just don't do business with them.

What are you selling and who is your buyer? This can be normal for large sales, taxed sales, and government sales. It can also be an area of concern if your buyer is from overseas. Move slow and don't be afraid to ask your buyer why they need this info. If they get offended then it was most likely a scam to begin with.
