Website Question

Hello,

I feel that i have a great idea for an internet company but i really dont know too much about it. I mean i know i need to pay go-daddy or yahoo for a domain name and i know a little about front page but thats about it.

Can anyone recommend some informative books, websites etc... on this topic. For instance how do i get to the top of a google search and so on.

Thanks in advance

look for cheap chosting that would fit you requirements
you can get cheaper domains then yahoo or go daddy
if your using frontpage remember you need a host that will support this
Also remember frontpage is not always WYSIWYG
finally what type s your website and people like Chris Cardell will help to provide information to get to the no.1 on google search engines

I question the legitimacy of your idea given your lack of basic knowledge on the internet. Finding a domain registrar doesn't even constitute a decision worth discussing. People spend years (no joke) trying to get to the top of google. It is not easy gaining the knowledge or implementing it.

That being said..go to

w3schools.org for anything html, css, server sided scripting related. You'll need this info to be able to build a site yourself.

If you have the cash, you can find web programmers at rentacoder.com or google web designers.

Now for seo (search engine optimization) just hit google up and when you've read more than your pupils can handle, read some more. Forums like seochat.com are helpful as well.

Do some research and then come back with more serious questions and concerns. Goodluck!

Just in case you're not already aware... the following are the list of things you need to get a website up and running (generally)

1) Once you have the idea, I generally first look for a .com domain and grab it. www.dotster.com is good as you can search for up to 50 domains. I register my domains with www.godaddy.com simply because they're cheap, reliable and have a good reputation (of course you can buy from thousands of other places).

2) Hosting. You can create the website offline and then when you're ready look for some web hosting and upload the site. In a couple of recent websites I'm working on I needed the hosting first. I went with www.dreamhost.com. They're nice and cheap for starting out and you can host multiple sites with multiple domains on the one account (which is what we were after)

3) Creating the site. I'd strongly suggest that you learn the basics of HTML (see the links provided in previous posts). When you learn that there are other programs which can make the process easier such as Dreamweaver, Frontpage etc. Or the other option is to use a CMS (content management system) such as www.joomla.org ... and there's a few others. With Joomla you can have a complete site up and running within a few hours (you need hosting to start with).

4) When you begin getting into the coding side of things, you can either hire a coder (see link above) or learn it yourself. PHP, MySQL and CSS is probably the base languages for dynamic websites... then you can get into XML and AJAX etc.

Hope that helps

cheers

Well, you could save a lot of time learning about the topic by simply hiring someone to do the work for you. But if you are truely interested and would like to learn it in depth yourself, then follow the advice that others have posted.

Most young entrepreneurs or small business owners do not have the capital to hire people.

Thats also a major reason why most young entrepreneurs and sbo fail with their business ventures.

In this day and age, alot of the services needed by nascent entrepreneurs are very affordable (web design, business registration etc). Yes, it is *great* to bootstrap and do it on your own but you have to recognise your strengths and weaknesses. You might save money by doing it on your own but compromise the quality of the project and your time.
