who here is making money from there site? if so how long did it take for them to start earning decent money

Took about two years.

First six months focused heavily on building the website and making sure it works. Next six months focus heavily on SEO. Final year focusing on improvements and mainly marketing. I'd say give it a good 2-3 years to start making, "decent" money. Of course that is heavily dependent on your efforts. The biggest time consumer is taken up by the fact that people are slow to adopt new technology/resources. First they have to discover the resource, then they have to have a need for it and finally they adopt it. Even if you have an absolutely brilliant idea it will take time due to this reason.

It just depends on the site, niche, etc. I've had sites making in the X,XXX within 2.5 months, and then others it took at least 6 months to hit those numbers.

Why did you not took some open source like phpBB, installed it to some free hosting within ten minutes, register your domain and then spent 2-3 months in SEO (mainly link building or outsourced this service) to get it running?

eCommerce still makes money if you can get 2% sales conversion rate with good margin (40% or above). AdSense is meaningless like any other other network because with average 0.2% CTR earning you a few cents you need 2,5M visitors to earn $100.
