    Website competitive advantage

    Hi

Is it possible for a website to have a unique competitive advantage? Or is it only IP which makes you unique? For example the name facebook cant be used but then anyone can make a social networking site similar to it where people can upload photos of themselves. Can someone give me examples of what would count as a unique competitive advantage?

    Thanks

Each website is different from other websites. Each website is identified with individual URLs assigned or created for them. As for unique competitive advantage, I think a website's advantage will be identified with it's content, physical appearance, and accessibility. Visitors of sites will go for pages that allow them to navigate through your pages easily. Being user-friendly.

Interesting post, Competitive advantage is defined as the strategic advantage one business entity has over its rival entities within its competitive industry. Achieving competitive advantage strengthens and positions a business better within the business environment. Information technology has become such a prominent part of the modern business world that it can also contribute to competitive advantage by outperforming competitors with regard to internet presence. Thanks for sharing.

It is really important that you give serious thought to what your competitive advantage is when starting a business online, and very often this is not given the amount of time or consideration that it merits. You need to be known for something that makes you stand out - otherwise you will be lost in the crowd.

yeah but my point is that on a website can't almost anything be copied apart from the name? Is there an example of something that is unique that cant be copied?

There are two types of competitive advantages: sustainable and unsustainable. A sustainable one means that your competition cannot offer what you offer or do what you do that makes you unique. Unsustainable means that eventually others will catch on and copy you.

As far as a website is concerned, intellectual property can be a competitive advantage if done correctly, some of the features on your website can be too. Basically, researching your business competition and learning how they operate can be a good tool to determine what to do differently.

Design and your content cannot be copied. If you own them, then they are yours. Don't forget that the most important part of a website is content, followed closely by design and usability.

I agree that the content and other things can be copied from a website, but the main thing is the reputation and it cant be copied. Yes you can make a website which is similar to facebook or other famous websites but the main thing is that you cant get the users like facebook have. There are so many social networking sites on here, but why people just stick to twitter or facebook, that is because they provide users some unique content and they are user friendly sites, you can copy something but cant beat it.
