Twitter announces Promoted Tweets advertising service

Twitter have announced that they are finally implementing a system which harnasses the marketing and advertising potential of the 140 character service in a viral marketing meets PPC emalgamation known as Promoted Tweets.

I believe that user-centred approaches are the way forward for marketing and advertising campaigns, and I feel Twitter's Promoted Tweets has the end user in mind. Organically produced content which would have appeared on Twitter anyway cannot be a bad thing, with the need to that content to be engaging seeming to serve as a safeguard against spamming. I look forward to seeing how Twitter evolves this idea and how it is used by SMMs.

Saying that, however, I also believe that engaging content will sell a product or push traffic to a website without the need to pay for it. The very nature of viral and SMM is that we create something of value for the audience and, because of that, they pass it on to their friends. This is something we will need to remember as, no matter how much is paid for a Promoted Tweet, the content will still need to be of a high quality to ensure the tweet remains in the search listings.

What does everyone think? How do you think you will use it for your business?

interesting, I think this is twitters way to cash in on some of their traffic and business's that are on there. I know bigger companies will definitley want their promotions up there.

Finally they start. I was wondering when they would start paid advertisements on their sites. I wonder how it will work out though. People have had mixed reactions to Facebook ads.

I'm not sure if I would use it or not. I am using Twitter to promote my website, but am finding that, by providing engaging and interesting content, and by getting involved with conversations on Twitter, you can drive traffic without having to pay for it.

How do you think you would change the way you wrote your tweets if they were being used as promoted tweets?
