    Trendy Jewelry Business

Hi, I'm a 21 yr old Political Science major and in my spare time I love to shop for funky, trendy jewelry. I am thinking about turning this hobby of mine into a small home based business. I plan to purchase my jewelry wholesale and package it in a new, interesting way. And I even have the coolest name for the business and an even better logo drawn out. What are some of the things I should consider when starting up this business like pros, cons, laws, etc. Thanks in advance for all your help. You know its like you really enjoy somehing with all your heart and you think, "Hey why not make some money and have fun also."

Sound interesting. What you need is something to seperate yourself from the competition. A particular flair. The packaging idea sound ideal for this role.

    Good luck,

It is a really good idea but before you start off your business, you should think of
the cost- the cost of purchasing wholesale and the cost of packaging. you should also
consider the worst case scenario i.e what will happened if most of the jewellery you
purchased wholesale remained unsold. the pros of this business is that there are many
people looking for funky and trendy jewellery. may be you can pick up similar designed
jewellery, put them together and sell them as a set of collection in order to make it
an unique product in the eye of the customers. anyway, hope it will help. good luck.

Hey, let me know how this goes. I am a jewelry designer, and I sell the stuff I make at craft fairs and at my online store, Lex's Creations. Good luck to you, and hooray for jewelry!

It sounds like a great idea, in the first place i think that packing will allow you to serperate your self from tehh crowds of other poeple pedeling useless garbage. Im not totally sure about how much it takes to start a venture like that, but it doesnt sound to high. This sounds like a really great idea.

I know of a girl who makes fantastic beaded jewelry & sells it to stores/galleries. I could connect you to her if you were interested. jenartkerr@aol.com

Your off to a great start in choosing a product you know and love, which will keep you inspired and motivated during the many challenging and disappointing parts of starting a business. If you can define your goal as truly wanting to benefit your customers, rather than a focus on pure profit, you're on the right track.

That said, jewellery is also one of the most competitive areas you can enter. Your average mall will have at least a few stores selling it, and likely a kiosk or two. It's available at Wal-Mart, drug stores, and gas stations.

Don't let that stop you - just keep it in mind and make your jewellery unique in some way. Fun packaging, humorous necklaces, custom bracelets. Or pick a certain niche that you can sell to, like punk jewellery or cowboy necklaces... anything where you can stand out as the specialist.

For example, I've been searching everywhere for a necklace/pendant with a cyclist on it that I can wear during races. I've looked around in stores with no success, and online the prices are much too high and shipping is usually over $10 for a tiny necklace.

This may be too specific for a store or kiosk, but if you produced a whole line of sport related pendants, bracelets, etc. and sold them wholesale - you'd fill the niche. Of course, this is just a single example... there are thousands of other ideas.

Would you be selling the jewellery retail, or doing wholesale amounts to other stores?

    Good luck!
    Mike
