My tip would be to write a plan out and determine your operating expenses first. Another tip would be to learn a little about SEO BEFORE you get the site built.

Start by figuring out what you're passionate about. After all, this is something that's going to consume most of your waking hours - working, promoting, etc - so you need to make sure you're not going to get bored or burned out over the topic.

Once you have that figured out, you need to learn all you can about SEO. That way, your site and your business plan will be correct - right from the start.

You can start an online business with affiliate programs by marketing someone else's products through affiliate programs. you are paid a percentage of sales that are made when you refer someone to a company's website.

If you already know SEO, I would start with a good website and blog. Then I would make money using affiliate marketing and adwords. Use a website to your advantage. As far as what to sell online, well that is up to you, What are you interested in what are you passionate about?
Once you figure that out do some research. Are others selling it online? How are they doing it? Is it a popular item to be sold online? Do some research on things like that. Second, on the promotional end, there are millions of ways to market online. SEO and Pay Per Click are proboly the fastest way to get exposure, but both can become very expensive to do if you are not familiar with it, but some books on both subjects and learn about them before spending any money on them. YouTube is really hot right now as far as Video Marketing. Blogs are very popular now as well, offering advice on the benefits and value of your product/service. Keeping people updated on you, your company and your offerings. And of course the social Networking sites sites as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and other community sites and forums are great places to get exposure as long as you market correctly. There is alot to using these tools to get success, but these are the most popular ways to get traffic to your online business. From there you need to use these tools to drive potential clients to the site. Hope that helped a bit.
