Talking Tips for a Skateboard/Snowboard clothing line?

Hey guys, I am new to the thread. I have been running a business for about a year now called nevewear. I would tell you to check out our website but it is actually down for updates, but should be up in a week or two.

I am writing here because I could really use some contacts and tips. We have a two skaters that ride for us as well as a snowboarder that we sponsor. We have have attended about four comps over the last year but I really just feel like our name isn't getting out there. I know we need to get into more shops but are struggling with that. We could really use some marketing tips and help building a business model.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I hope to hear back from all you great people.

    Hi Tom,

The skate/snowboard as you probably know is now very competitive. Here are some ideas I have:

-Run a contest/giveaway (maybe like best video trick uploads gets a bunch of product and other cool prizes)

-Make connections with everyone you can in the industry through social media (how big is your Twitter and Facebook circles?)

    -Co-sponsor a local demo

-Get a sales booth in any major local/regional festival or trade show you can afford

-Make a video of your sponsored riders and distribute it

-Think outside the box and maybe sponsor a band, poker player, mma fighter or someone with more mainstream exposure

    -advertise in local magazines

-call every skate/snowboard shop you can and try to have them sell your product

Hope to see the site soon and those are just a few suggestions. Just try everything you can think of. You will have to spend money if you want to get your name out there. Best of luck with your clothing biz in 2012!

I've owned a skate shoe company for about 7 years now. There are a whole list of things you can do. Here are the most inexpensive ideas that have yielded results:

    - T-shirts are cheap to make. Hand them out. Pick an area of concentration and handout t-shirts and stickers. Kids love stickers.

    - Attend trade shows, they are expensive, therefore just get passes, not a booth, and do the same, meet people and hand stuff out. The people who attend trade shows are all people involved in the industry, owners, riders, active members.

    - Contests, local contests are very inexpensive to hold and its easy to actually turn a profit on them as well as get your name out there. Work with local skate shops as they usually have pull with park owners and towns for permits.

Keep thinking along those lines. You can always pm me. Another thing, don't take down your website for updates. If you have to setup a php/mysql website and need the Index open, Change your domain DNS settings to a separate server for the few weeks it will be down and put your old site there. Having your website down KILLS your Search engine rankings and most people will think your company went under hurting all marketing efforts you've done in the past.
