    This is why new businesses will beat out old businesses...

    I got in to a huge fight with my dad, he owns a landscape company and I just started one too but he won't change his ways so his company won't be able to compete with mine.

    I have tried to explain to him that with technology we could hire workers as we need them. He won't do this so a lot of times he has to many employees for small jobs and not enough for big jobs.

    When I have work, I hire someone to do that work. I pay them what I can afford to make a profit but I don't have to keep them on when the work is over. I guess you can say its like going to a day labor site and picking up a worker but I pick up workers a better and more efficient way.     Adapting and using new resources is why new businesses will beat out old business. Less waisted time equals more profit.

    these seems more of a rant than a thread.

    his company has already word of mouth on you.

    your company has nothing

    his company is established

    your company still will go through 'noobie' problems

    his company has trained employees

    your company is relying on 'hopeful' employees


    but yes new businesses will always take on old ones but at the same ones, old ones get new people to run them so essentially they can be a 'new business' while keeping loyalty, there name, customer base, etc
    You can't achieve your goals if you don't take that chance so go pry open your trunk and take those amps.

    I have learned from mistakes and now I'm going to apply new methods to the old way of doing business. Cutting down on the cost of employees by hiring workers on an as needed bases at the start is the best way for a start up to be successful.

    I can also pay my employees more and therefore getting better employees because I don't incur the same cost of a full time employee.

    So you are trying to say that your fathers established company does not know what it is doing.. and your start-up company is better... come back to us in 5 years and let me know which is still in business... Immaturity often leads to thinking you can do everything better then those who have already done it...

    Go buy your dad a six pack of beer... go over to his house and apologize for being an immature ass... maybe if you are lucky he will teach you a thing or two about business.

    Sorry another arrogant poster just put me in a bad mood... you are not as smart as you think you are.. and take advice when you can get it..

    Sometimes, business isn't just about piling up just as much cash as you can as fast as you can for yourself, no mater what you do, or how you use other people.

    Sometimes, it's about building something and being responsible for something bigger then you are. I bet your father has known some of his employees for many years, knows their kids, and wives, and he knows good people don't come cheap.

    Can you pick up anyone on the side of the road to shovel dirt, of course, can you expect him or her to know how to landscape. Nope.

    Do you think Bill Gates would be a Billionaire today if he had simply hired people long enough to get what he wanted and then gotten rid of them? No way. If he did that we would probably not even know what Microsoft is today. Instead, several hundred of his employees are multi-millionaires also, because he took care of the people that helped take care of him.

    Does a business have to be profitable, most definitely. Do you simply have to use as many people as need to make it profitable, and then kick them out on their butt once it is profitable, No. If you do this I doubt you'll stay profitable for long.

    I'm sure you're not the first little snotty nosed kid on the scene trying to compete with your fathers business, but I'm sure it's the one that hurts him the most to have to compete against, and be looked down by. I'd see what lessons your father has for you to learn about business before you think you know how it all works.

    I was in sort of the same situation, my dad owns an established business and he has been in the telecom industry for more than half of his lifetime, around 30 years...I thought I knew all about telecom began my whole new thing and wanted to do this and that a very firey(sp) person you seem to also be. But the bottom line is he has an established business, he has a great reputation around his customers and is very much respected in the industry he is in. He has a strong customer base and you don't, he has been doing it for 30 or so years you've been doing it for maybe 1...He has over 2000 customers you have 10...He is "old fashioned" which means he doesn't do the job in the most efficient way but does it in the best way to please his customers. Efficient does not mean good it means the opposite most of the time. And his contractors do a much more quality work for him than yours because you hire on a job to job basis but he has a full time staff. Get over yourself join your dads business and combine both of your perspectives and always respect your father's business, he knows what he is doing and you obviously don't.
