This guy wants 1000 DOLLARS for a domain...I SAY its over-priced.

There is a certain domain that I'm looking to buy...I don't want to disclose the name, but its 8 letters

long, and its catchy..according to http://www.websitevaluecalculator.com/ , the domain is worth 78.00

. Other free value calculator tools estimate it to be as high as 682.00 ( Which is a HUGE difference in

valuation..I don't see why its so wide) But I'm just not going to pay 12x the true value. The website

doesn't even exist, its JUST a name at this point, and I feel like this guy is yanking my chain. He says

he has other offers, but wont disclose how much they offered to pay. Sketchy?..I think so.

If I was you, I'd pay that 1k to him. You said the name is catchy.

I found a domain name that I want that relates to hosting, costs 2k+ and there's no website. I'm still going to buy it. Because I feel it would be profitable for me in the long run rather than the short run.

I approached another person asking about the price for a 9 character domain, and his asking price? 1700+ but its worth it because its got a website online, and a strong community.

However, I've seen people who asks for 100k for a website that used to pull in half of california...but migrated into another social website...Do I think its worth 100k? No.

Another good example is that there's this xbox website that has a hyphen in the middle - I approached the owner, and the owner's asking price? For an old xbox website that isn't gathering community participation? 10k. His reason? "Oh! The page rank and ads are more important to me!" He says. Even I know that was bull$#!t.

How much are you willing to pay? Hit him with that number and tell him you can Paypal him immediately or send certified funds (or some other method of showing your earnestness.)

If the guy has other offers, great, let him take those other offers. But the "other offers" line is the oldest trick in the book. If the other offers were even close to $1000, he would have taken one of them already.

I wouldn't pay more than $200 for that. To me, the domain is way too long. However it does have some nice keywords.

    Hey SL,

The fact that there isn't a website attached to the name doesn't really matter. Names without sites have sold for tens, even hundreds of thousands of dollars. I have to agree with Derek. Bottom line is that a domain name is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay. I don't believe he has other offers. That's a standard sales tactic. The reality is that unless a domain is exceptional, you don't get a lot of offers, and if you do, you take anything even close to what you're asking. Traffic doesn't really matter that much either. Sure if it has huge traffic, you can get more for the name, but you could have registered it yesterday, and the price still has more to do with how much someone wants it than anything else. Like Derek said, make him an offer and put a deadline on it. Chances are he'll bite if your offer is realistic.

    Hope that helps some.

    Best of luck,
    John

It is long.. but those are some amazing keywords. I bet he'd sell for $500 is your sweat him for a bit... A key element to this conversation is what other domains are available for this niche? If you think the price is to high then find a different domain. If you can not find another domain then the price is just right!

Domain pricing varies on a lot of factors. Just because the domain isn't in use doesn't mean it can't be worth a lot of money. A lot of domaineers will argue with you in terms of what they consider a valuable domain depending on the word or words. I don't know what this 8 letter long domain name is but if its good, it can be worth quite a bit. You'll have to do a bit more research to determine if its worth it or not.

Then don't buy it from him.

Try to talk him down if you like, but you need to be willing to
walk away from the deal if you cannot get it for a price
    you like.

I don't really go for names that have over eight characters, however, if the name is catchy and the keywords are great, that's a whole different story altogether. I'd prolly try to talk him down first, don't bite just yet, you'll never know when something better turns up.

Bid your way to it - it will matter as long as that seller would want that domain sold at once and that if he wants you to take the deal. He'll lose the opportunity with you if he'll not accept your offer though.

    Good luck!

This domain name is very long. You may want to check the history of this domain name as well if you are spending that amount of money.

those website evaluator sites arent the best and most accurate, most domains are sold with no website attatched including some high end 3-5 letter adult domains, they are sold on their woth as "catchy" names as you put it, the fact the domains are high end keywords and also take into account the potential earnings back from the domain.

Your domain appraisals are by software/scripts? That's your problem. Get it appraised by a person.
