    Smile The word "commodity"

This is more of a general word usage question. I wasn't sure which topic to place it under.

Can I use the word "commodity" in the name of a business that sells all kinds of stuff that people would need for the winter? Would it make sense? For example, I can name the company... Winter Commodities.

Or as another example, for a business that would sell car parts. I can name the company Automotive Commodities.

Well, I'm sure you get the point. What's your opinion?

    not really

a commodity is an undifferentiated, homegenous (i.e. unbranded) good

    coal is a commodity

all coal is more or less the same (unless you wanna get technical) and it will cost the same no matter whether you're in lahore or LA

with commodities, traders get sucessful by establishing stable distribution channels. since all their competitors market the same product, the vendor will need to compete on basis other than product quality

with winter goods, since your competititors will be selling diffrent kinds of goods at different prices, there is scope to differentiate (i.e. brand) the shop and the product selection

If you're interested in the definition just to the point of using it as a catchy name that no one else has used, then sure. Name your business whatever the hell you want, your own branding initiatives will have a lot to do with how people perceive it.

With your two examples: Winter commodities would make me think of things like firewood, blankets, etc. Things I'd use on a camping trip basically.

The Automotive commodities moniker makes me think of a big box store with bushels of unlabled parts in wire bins that you have to sift through to find one that works. Junkyard kind of a thing.

Basically, you can use a name like that IMO, but it's more fitting of a bargin distributor or reseller. Hope that that helps some.
