The frustrations of having to work a regular job while building a business.

I don't like working for people and im at the point in my life where I need to start doing my own thing. I hate the job i'm at (even though i've move up to the management level). I formed an LLC in a last month after weeks and weeks of brain storming of what kind of business to get into. So now the LLC is formed, EIN is a go, I leaning towards retail clothing. I like close to new york so this particular type of business is hard to get into so i planned on trying to do business in the caribean. I already have a small market in trinidad and tobago (i make money on the side buying items in new york and moving them down south) I'm trying to do it way bigger. I'm working on building a connection to this wholeseller in china and one in korea. I just opened a business account with $200.00 (lol) My personal credit is sh1tty, so i've been slowly trying to repair it little by little. Its going to take me about a 9 months to a year to build a decent business credit profile (dnb). To raise funds for my venture I'm about to launch a website similar to www.escrow.com. The site is almost done. I'm not trying to get rich off of this site, just using it as a means to raise money. I don't like having to pay interests on loans. I'd rather earning myself. The way I have it set up, I will only need to average 3 or 4 transactions per week to reach my goals by summer 2007. I now have an 888 business and fax line.

The more i get into this working for myself the MORE, I'm loosing interest at my day job. I hate going to work now and its starting to affect my overall performance. I see being at this job as time I could be spending working on building this website or working on my business or coming up with new ideas. If all goes according to plan I'm leaving this job by may or june of next year.

Tell me about it, i have a job and a young baby and i'm really trying to get things off the ground business wise too. I passed my degree in biochemistry (the course was 4 years) have been working fully qualified for 3 years but i dont have any passion for the job! All i think about is my business aspirations ( i wanna open an e-commerce maternity clothing store) and where can i find suppliers! So i totally get where you are coming from.

I was in the same boat, contact me. My company is less than 1 year old (5 months to be exact) but I have years in this industry. If you need to raise funds for your ventures. I can show you how I did it. I was a empties broker for used inkjets. It's paid for my start up costs for my wholesale business and all my equipment and advertising.

wow nice thread here. I think there are many more people out here with this same feeling but are afraid to take the risks. I as well am trying to get things off the ground and don't have the funds to quit and pay full attention to my business and ideas. It is frustrating but hey gotta keep going till you find something that makes the money to leave. Great post and welcome to YE..

Nice Thread... I think that a lot of people go thru this when first starting up and its been my experience that usually if you hate your job... its a good catalyst so long as you are busy with a business project at the time... if not you'll soon just find yourself in another job.

The most you can expect to do at this point is simple try out different ventures until you find one that fits. There is no harm in trying different things till you find a "fit". Just remember that its a journey! Enjoy it, learn from it, and move forward with it.

    Freedom is worth the risk

Very real to life post. I too have hated my jobs for years now and wished for the day to quit. Well I quit my job in March of 06. While I am not doing my main venture full time yet, I started a contracting company. I did not know how it would go or how I would generate business. This was a nerve breaker, but as time went on we got more and more business. We've done work for Doctors, C.E.O.'s and non profits. We have worked on many homes with customer satisfaction. The contracting season is getting slow now, but we secured a two year contract to perform weekly maintenence on a 25,000 sq ft office building. While I am not rich from this, It has allowed me to cover all of my monthly bills and has given me free time because I hired two college students to manage it for me. Why this is nothing on a grand scale, hopefully it can provide some encouragement to you.

However my main venture which is the interactive condom line is where my passion lyes. I have tons of time now to develop and create a customer base. Still looking to make more money to fund it, but at least its some progress. Much success to you all, don't quit, don't give up and keep pushing forward.

I think a lot of folks can relate to this.

Some might call NOT leaving your day job while you build a business being risk adverse. Others might call it prudence. Either way, its a situation a LOT of us are in.

Because the 9-5 duties dont' stop or get any easier or more enjoyable just because you've got something on the side to pique your interest. And in my case, I haven't worked a 9-5 day since I left college. Being a traveling IT consultant and somehow find time to put the pieces together on the side, is difficult.

I work monday - friday 9-6 but because i manage 15 people and have more responsibilities I end up staying late some days. I'm married so i have to find time for the Mrs. and being married is a job in itself for that matter.

    CEO-

I understand that, I am a supervisor and am often at work from 6:30am - 5 or 6pm. I too am married but also have an 11month old who turns a year on Nov. 6th, so spending time with them is a major priority as well. I totally see that side of it. Trying to find time to work(make the money),spend quality family time, and then start a business on the side is very overwhelming, but I have another wrench in the works also, I have Narcolepsy, so I need as much sleep as possible. So when others may stay up late and work, I try to but don't want to over do it and have a third accident. So yes it is frustrating, but hey where there is a will there is a way, and by God's help I'll find it one way or another.

    Good Luck..

Cons: Not enough time for your side ventures
Your time and energy used for your day job and spent by the time you need it for your side business......
More time needed but same amount of time available. (Days don't get longer just for your benefit)

I do http://BuyNick.com, mostly on autopilot, but advertising and answering customer emails is where I spend my time.

I take MBA classes at night

    I am married.

I work part-time merchandising and mystery shopping jobs throughout the day when I'm not working on my web business. I find this is the best way to keep a steady income while growing my business. If anyone is interested in starting merchandising, I just searched for that term on places like monster.com and careerbuilder.com. I found a list of mystery shop companies under the Get Paid To link on volition.com. It takes some time to signup for each company, but once you do you get email notices from most of them with shops, if they have any, in your area.

I'm all about multiple streams of income, so if one dries up I have others. That's why I sell on eBay (eBay powerseller user id: visitormania), have several different sites, and do the other part-time jobs.

That's the beauty of it, by doing lots of stuff I don't have to have one full-time job and I make way more than my wife does who sits at an office all day long. BuyNick.com is my primary source of income, but it's by no means full-time.
