The Ethics of Networking (Social Connections)

I have found little discussion on the ethics of networking. That is, developing relationships (acquaintances or friendships) for the purposes of personal advancement. So, I want to suggest a question for discussion.

Is it ethical to network with people for the purposes of personal advancement?

Interesting question! This type of networking (ie: through networking groups) is often done with many individuals who have the same goal in mind. Since it is a common goal for everyone, I don't see any ethical problem with it. Generally, the only effective way to network is to help others first. Even if you are ultimately looking for your own personal advancement, I personally wouldn't consider it unethical as long as you are helping others and not hurting anyone.

After all, if personal advancement is unethical, none of us would be entrepreneurs, now would we?

Never thought of it in that way - as an ethical question. Always have just seen it as the way it is. I'd throw in that any and all networking by anyone who has a job, needs a job or is running their own business (aka pretty much anyone) of any kind is for personal advancement. From any sales job down to the mail room clerk going to the company Christmas party everyone is looking for something from someone. Anyone you know is a potential client/boss or lead. It's human nature. "It's all in who you know" as they say. But there's two sides to the coin. You may be networking for clients or employment while others are looking for suppliers or workers. I'd say ethical...but good question!

An old boss of mine had two sayings: "You gotta eat", and "You do you"--its true, when it comes down to it, we really have to look out for ourselves and our family. Those that look for personal advancement profit because ambition is rewarded. It's natural and even a law of survival.

As long as your contributing to the other person's well being and it's mutually beneficial, I don't see why it'd be unethical. If you're just a taker and never give back, that's another story.
