Tax ID and Business Licenses

I'm looking to start up a business in the future. To save some money for the business, I've decided to sell hand-made jewelry at craft shows. To do that you have to charge sales tax. Can I get a tax ID number without incorporating? What kind of licenses, if any, do I need to obtain to sell my jewelry and such shows? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My understanding is that you can get sales permit without incorporating. You would have to file for a DBO (doing business as). In most cases your tax number is your social security number for a DBA.

After that you can get a sales permit from the board of equilization. I'm not sure what state you're in, but here in California the site is:

http://www.boe.ca.gov

As usual, check your local offices for specifics as to how things work in your area.

An EIN (Tax ID) usually acts as a social for the business. When you are not incorporated you are a sole proprietor so the tax ID would be your social. The IRS says you do not need an EIN for a sole proprietor.
