Summer Business
I'm looking into starting up something for summer, just wondering if you all have any ideas. I will most likely be working full time also this summer so something that can be juggled would be nice.
Here in Utah, Snowie shaved ice, and Darn fresh corn has been big (Darn fresh corn is a corn supplier that has little stands set up in many grocery store parking lots.)
What things like these are done where you are at? maybe I could work with something that hasnt hit Utah yet.
Thanks
Jeff

Well I hear Utah has some of the highest Internet porn traffic in the world...
Seriously though, if its summer, and you're near a lake/sea, you could rent a large boat and offer cruises. Alternatively offer to host some sorta kids program (do they have holidays in the summer?)

going with the above idea, kids camp? Hire some college students to work the camp, and a few responsible adults to manage the employees. A day camp or something would work out good I think.

Costs
A day camp, depending on the size; let's say a small day camp with 10 counselors and 1 supervisor, with 100 kids. This will cost about 6300 a week not including if you plan to do field trips or such, and if you charge each kid about $75; that comes out to a profit of about 1200 a week. This sounds good until I drop the bomb, the truth is that there is a lot of paper work when working with children, some states require that you do background checks on all your employees, and you will need insurance, kids get hurt all the time, i've seen worse case scenarios. A little off topic once a camper had a stick go all the way through her foot, so things happen. After you factor in all the cost you will end up in the red, unless you have a government grant or a wealthy donor. Anyways unless you want to become a religious group or cult over night I would not advise you doing a day camp (religious groups are not subject to the same restrictions and as much paper work). It's too costly. Trust me I know, I worked here http://www.pecometh.org for the last three years and before than I worked at a day camp for 2 years, so I am experienced in that field.

Suggestion
Try to organize some event. I know that here during the summer people are bored, I live in the country. People around here will pay to go see grass grow. So maybe like live band perfomances from local bands and charge like $5-10 a person. The local bands get the much needed publicity and you get much of the profits. Think about it.
