    Starting a Magazine

I've done some research and I'm still not sure about what I NEED to have legal wise. I know that I need an ISSN in order to have issues mailed, and I believe i need a second class mailing permit as well. I'm not sure but I think I need a serial and periodicals copyright. I know that I need to trademark my logo and name as well as get a business license and I'm not sure about if I need to get an EIN for my writers. Not Exactlly sure about all the steps and measures I need to take and I'd like to make sure that I've done everything that I need to do. Right now I only want to start a magazine but later on down the line I'd like to have a publishing company. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance.

You seem to have a feel for what you need... except the fact that you need to contact an attorney. Free legal advice is worth exactly what you pay for it... nothing.

    Magazine Publishing

    Hi there Haze,

Yes, you are on the right track. All of your questions are very valid.

If you are a magazine publisher who needs detailed information on the BIPAD magazine coding system and an application for a BIPAD number, please contact Harrington Associates LLC, the administrators of the BIPAD system at the following URL:

    BIPAD, Inc.

Once you have obtained your industry-standard, 5-digit BIPAD magazine title identification number, you will then need to get in touch with PIPS for your U.P.C. bar code master or labels (PIPS - Home Page)

If you require an EIN number, you can now apply online here:

Apply for an EIN (Employer Identification Number) Online

As RogercBryan mentioned, you should consult an attorney and also an accountant to make sure you are following the proper legal steps in getting your new business set up.

If you have any magazine publishing related questions, please do post them here and I will do my best to answer them for you.

    Good luck,

    Adam T.

Thanks for the websites I'll check them out, I'll also start looking at lawyers. But be on the lookout because I'll be posting again more than likely.
