Someone must be able to help me out here

I've met people before who have had an idea for a product, they made prototypes, hired an "agent" and had production set up in china at a relatively low cost. The person in mind I met, said he hired an agent in Los Angeles who set everything up for him in China.

Does anyone know any of these agencies that have agents. I've looked into alibaba a lot, and I'm not really comfortable establishing business relationships on there...

    Thanks for your help!

I have a manufacturing contact in China, depending on what you are looking to manufacture.

It depends on what product you are trying to manufacturer. You have to find the right manufacturer for the product with good quality and better prices as well. I will PM later with more details.

Talk to the shops that make prototypes, most have contacts for the manufacturing overseas. Meet with an agent that will handle everything; i.e. shipping, taxes, packaging, etc. Get a quote to your door.

I think the prototypers are your best bet.

    update

I decided that getting a prototype and drawings was something I need to do. I have visual designs, but took the liberty of calling some deisgn-prototype companies in los angeles. - have an appointment setup next week with T2 designs.(They were the company that helped contestants on the show american inventor). They told me that a rough estimate of putting a prototype together was 10 grand. My budget is 20. To get production setup overseas has got to be atleast that last ten in my budget... Anyone have any experience or tips on keeping startup costs low?

Use rapid prototyping. You should be able to find a small engineering firm to produce one or a few prototypes for you. A major issue will be making the CAD drawings and spec'ing the material you want to use for the product.

If you want a low cost alternative, find a freelance mechanical engineer to do the design and suggest materials. Then use a service like emachineshop.com to create cheap prototypes. You should be able to get your prototypes for around $500 setup and around $5-$10 per piece.

    tbeer,

I met a manufacturing guy (Illinois base) in the a different forum who. His product is called GetAGrip but his company is called 3R Products. Here's the website
3R Products, Inc. Home of the Get-A-Grip

I believe he's connected with other manufacturing factories in Bloomington. Anyway, I don't feel comfortable revealing his name on here so if you please PM me so I can tell you. It might be worth a shot to pick his brains regarding your problem.
