Hi bizz, its good that you are interested in starting your own software company. But let me give you some bad news, you must be knowing that this industry already saturated but as technology changes daily, softwares are based on constant updation. Even though you are good in programming, I would advice you to try to build a software for one of the local companies there. Approach them and tell them you can provide them with a certain software which might increase their productivity. SO try out your business skills in this manner. Start small and gain momentum timely. This might help you in deciding.

bizz_man01 - you could make specialised software for local businesses such as like you said book-keeping software or a database software for a video rental comapny etc.

Just my advice - becuase if you try to get into the big area of the software makret you'll fry it is now a saturated market which utkarsh.s mentioned, anyways thats just my advice

Niche software is one of my businesses. Can be very profitable if it is the right product.

What languages do you program in?

Howdy!
The first thing you need to do is read all articles on the Joel On Software website. Especially his book on user interfaces.
Those are a must if you want to get rich making software.
After you've read all that, look around in the products that you're interested in. For example, if you've always been into accounting, (you need to get laid if you're into accounting!) look around in accounting products and try to find any gap in the market which the current accounting products aren't filling.

There are just 3 keys to a successful software product:
1- It has to make people's life easy. If you build something simply because its cool from a coding point of view, people won't buy it.

2- You must make it as easy and FUN to use as possible. People just won't try something thats complicated or isn't easy to figure out.

3- It must be something you love. If you pick something based solely on what you think is in demand, you won't enjoy working at it and you won't get rich.

I don't care how many competitors you have, how many open source guys are giving the same product away for free, or how many giant companies are trying to crush you. As long as you do the above 3 things right, your product will sell even if you have bill gates competing with you!
