    Social Media's Effect on Business

Is it absolutely necessary for businesses these days to now be involved with social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. or is it just something we've convinced ourselves is vital to a successful business?

I feel it is a necessity to be involved with social media. Creating a Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace account gives your business more exposure and an opportunity to bring in more sales.

To stay relevant and fresh with the times, its important to observe what's trending at the time. Take the trend, utilize it into your business plan if possible, really use it to your full advantage to increase business exposure.

Do you believe Facebook, Twitter, and the like are just trends or do you think that they are here to stay as far as marketing, advertising, and communicating business services go?

Social media utilised correctly can be a very powerful tool and bring success to a business, there have been many examples of this over the last few years. Social media is really the latest advetising/marketing kit for any business and can promote your brand in more ways than you could have imagined 5 or 10 years ago and to a greater audience there are over 2 billion people using the net worldwide now so who knows who could be reading your tweets, posts or latest blog.... it may even be your next potential client.

Social Media isn't just marketing. It is a representation of generational changes that the internet/web2.0 era has brought in. It isn't a fad, it's more like the invention of electricity or automobiles. Social Media as a whole is very premature, and over time all aspects (including brand marketing etc.) will be refined. Anything on a world-wide scale levels the playing field, and over time companies will find what works and what doesn't. For now, companies only have to do better than their competition (relatively speaking), and Social Media is an aspect of business which allows an opportunity to, in effect, do better than your competition.
